I hear what you are saying, and quite rightly too! Even if it isn't "required", I think it is important to share these sources of information and inspiration so that others may explore them on their own.

Where I do specifically state something is of "Native Tradition" it is either something which I learned from listening to Elders or other Natives speaking (publically or privately), a story I came across from some specific Tribe's oral tradition, or from an academic/anthropological work about Native Traditions, especially stories.

I try to stress throughout that these various lessons/wisdoms being discussed truly extend beyond any one culture or tradition, nor was I raised in Native Traditions. While many Native leaders have been inspirational to me throughout my life, it is only in recent years that I have found myself called, compelled really, in the direction of seeking out these Traditions.

Two of my earliest and most enduring influences in this life have been Chief Seattle and Buddha. I continue to learn from these and other similar sources, and am so very grateful for every opportunity to learn that embraces me... which seems to be predominantly Lakota, but certainly is more inclusive than exclusive. I'm working very hard not to offend anyone, although I am sure that there will Always be those who choose to be offended whether or not it is even spiritually relevant to them. Such is life.

At this point, as regards these Singing pieces, I only know that I am meant to share them with as many people as I can. I will do my best to fulfill this charge.

My sources of info? Many! A variety of informational websites on birds, animals, trees, etc. http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Carolina_Chickadee.html is one, for example. A large encylopedia of mammals available at any Borders is another. A wide variety of old tales from cultures around the world... http://www.firstpeople.us/FP-Html-Legends/Legends-AB.html for example. I've been reading myths, legends and lore from all cultures as long as I've been able to read! lol I've used Animal-speak and Nature-speak by Ted Andrews for quick reference and there are a few websites online that I also trust for quick reference... http://www.sayahda.com/cyc4.html I also look at what a given Teacher has symbolized over time. An Oak has been a symbol of strength pretty much as long as it's been a symbol of Sky and Lightning deities, for example. Once I've looked at all these sorts of things for a given Teacher, I think about how their physical nature and behavior can be translated symbolically, add my personal experience and impressions... and there are always pieces that the Teacher themselves will whisper to me to include. I like to include quotes that reflect each Teacher's lessons, and modern example from films, cartoons, books and songs as it is often easier for folks to relate this way. I like to show that this ancient information is still relevant and vital even thought it might have been the furthest thought in the minds of those who created the film/book/song I try to focus primarily on translating their natures and my personal experiences though.
